Service Options
Help Ahead is always free. Every infant, child, youth and family is unique, with their own concerns and needs. We’ll connect you with the services and supports that best fit your situation, whether you’re just getting started or looking for more specialized support.
Here are some of the services and supports we can connect you with:
Brief Services
Brief services provide short-term, focused support for youth and/or families experiencing one or two primary mental health concerns. They are intended for more recent stressors and needs that can be addressed through skill-building and solution-focused therapeutic approaches, such as emotion regulation, mild to moderate anxiety symptoms, coping skills, social skills and bullying.
Brief services:
- Focus on building practical skills quickly
- Typically provided over the course of up to eight sessions

Counselling & Therapy Services
Counselling and therapy services provide support for children, youth, and families who are experiencing mental health and wellbeing concerns. Counselling can support children, youth, and families to better understand their experiences, build coping skills, strengthen relationships, work through challenges and find strategies that support wellbeing.
Depending on the child’s or youth’s age, the type of counselling and support received may look different and can include working with the child, youth, caregivers, or the family together.
Counselling and therapy services can be:
- Individual counselling
- Family counselling
- Group counselling

Day Treatment Services
Day Treatment is a school-based mental health treatment program for children and youth who are experiencing social, behavioural and/or emotional challenges that make it difficult to cope in a traditional school environment. The program provides mental health and educational support to help students develop the skills they need to manage challenges and, whenever possible, successfully return to their community school.

Family Capacity Building & Support Services
Family capacity-building and support services are offered as group sessions that provide parents and caregivers with psychoeducation, practical skills and strategies to better support their child. These groups may focus on building healthy attachment and responding to children’s emotional and behavioural needs, including improving communication, responding to emotions and behaviours, and managing stress and anxiety.
Services may be offered virtually and/or in person, depending on the agency.

Intensive In-Home Services
Intensive In-Home Services provide support for children and youth who have been identified as having mental health needs that interfere with their daily living and may lead to family breakdown in either their home, school and/or community. These services provide intensive, practical support to help children, youth and families stabilize challenges, strengthen communication, build problem-solving skills and improve their ability to function together.
Intensive In-Home Services may be provided when other mental health services have been attempted but have not been effective.
Intensive In-Home Services can be:
- Provided in the home, community, school and/or agency setting
- Delivered by a counsellor and/or youth worker
- Focused on the child or youth, caregivers and/or the family together

Live-In Treatment
Live-in treatment provides intensive, therapeutic, 24-hour care and support for youth whose social, emotional and behavioural challenges require a higher level of support than can be provided in a traditional family or home environment. The program provides a structured and supportive setting where youth can develop and practise healthy coping and functioning skills, build healthy relationships and work toward greater stability. Live-in treatment may be short-term to support stabilization and can address a range of mental health challenges, including severe depression and/or anxiety that are significantly affecting a youth’s behaviour and functioning when community-based supports are not effectively meeting their needs.
Live-in treatment can include:
- 24-hour, staff-supported therapeutic care
- Short-term support for stabilization
- Support for significant social, emotional and behavioural challenges
- Opportunities to learn and practise healthy coping and functioning skills
- Support for building healthy relationships and strengthening family relationships
